David Weiss Sextet at The Falcon
"They use a hammerhead attack to twist hard bop DNA into remarkable hybrids, and the focus that invariably arises on the stand helps power the fierceness that has become their signature sound. ...there's always some ass-kicking in the air. But taking a cue or three from Wayne Shorter, they also have a way of smoothing things out in an oddly idiosyncratic manner." - Village Voice
From the halcyon days of the so-called “Young Lions” of the eighties till now, there have been trumpeters heralded as “the next big thing” or “the second coming of…” Through all the hype, the New York-born, trumpeter, arranger, composer and bandleader David Weiss has been a light at the end of the jazz tunnel. Through his leadership of the masterful New Jazz Composers Octet and his own sextet, Weiss has shown his unfailing dedication to the illumination and expansion of the marvelous sixties – from Freddie Hubbard and Miles Davis to the Blue Note catalog and beyond.
In a jazz climate that rewards neo-conservative tributes and exercises in deconstruction, Weiss has distinguished himself - finding flexibility and innovation in music that has it’s roots in the mainstream. The trumpeter, composer, and arranger has learned from some of the music’s quintessential figures by touring and/or recording with Freddie Hubbard, Charles Tolliver, Billy Harper, Bobby Hutcherson, Slide Hampton, James Moody, Tom Harrell, Louis Hayes and Billy Hart among others.
Featuring David Weiss/Trumpet, Myron Walden/Alto Sax, Ben Wendel/Tenor Sax, David Bryant/Piano, Luques Curtis/Bass and Jonathan Barber/Drums.
